Santorini, Greece – Honeymoon and Destination Wedding Photographers – Part 1

One of our couples this year just had their honeymoon in Greece, which inspired me to write this post.   Greece, and Santorini Island in particular, is the most romantic place on earth (in my humble opinion).  A perfect place for a destination wedding too! It has just stunning views, romantic beaches, walks and trips, unbelievable food and gorgeous hotels.  It is also on one my dream goals to shoot a wedding in Santorini overlooking the crater!

When you go, don’t just go for 1 day, a minimum of 3 days is a must to see the gems of this island.  When Maros and I visited Santorini in September 2008 we flew from Athens to Santorini at 6am.  We arrived to a glorious sunrise.  We followed some other tourists to a hotel van and hopped in! (we had no reservations). On the recommendation of the other couple we stayed for 3 nights at  Villa Popi, minutes walking distance from the Fira town center for  30 Euros a night including breakfast.   It had a great view of the  Aegean sea (not crater side) with a lovely public terrace.  The crater/cliff side, which was just a little walk over, had the 5 star hotels, that are simply perfect for honeymooners or brides and grooms!  They go for around 150 Euros a night.

After settling in at Villa Popi, we walked a couple minutes to the town center and rented an ATV, put on our helmets and went to explore the island!  What views!  We started with the black sand beach of Perissa on the South eastern corner of the island.  Then to the Red Beach on the south side of the western point, where you have to hike in to find this amazing red sand beach!  We drove to the windy westernmost point where the trees had no needles on one side, and the view of the rest of the island was breathtaking!  We drove back to our little hotel, after buying some ham cheese and bread from a local market.
One big thing in Santorini is to head to the crater side and watch the sunset.  The whole island seems to be there.  And you will see why… wow.   Then after sunset there are lots of cute shops and wonderful outdoor restaurants to hang out in.  Oh I wish I could be there now!
