“Confessions of a Strobist” @ Dorothy AB

Last Saturday we had the opportunity to take part of a Strobist meet up put on by Kurtis from Spindrift Photography – together along with 6 other talented photographers we ventured to the “Bad Lands” of the west – to Brooks Alberta. The idea was to explore different lighting setups on location using off camera flash as most photographers don’t use off camera flash as much. We played with Canon EX580 flash units and a large Alien Bee AB800 which was powered by the powerful Vagabond.

I have been using off camera lighting for few years and am a total addict to off camera lighting and extreme light modification. Most of these images were take during the harsh mid-day sun. But by introducing light more or equally  powerful as the light available allows us to ‘dim’ the ambient light and emphasize the subject – drawing attention to certain elements (as the cross in few images). A big thanks to our models Magda and Jessie – they were super awesome and a pleasure to work with – thanks girls! In the past I photographed Magda as part of the Brazilian Dance Group here in Calgary. Here are some pics.

I was glad to have some personal “creative time” to follow my vision for the location and Jessie – “Confession Sessions” were born at the old church at Dorothy.

in the other building were 3 confession booths! how about that – these made a perfect location for a mini-shoot – all I could say was: “instant awesomeness”
